The Village Today
The parish encloses two villages situated on either side of the majestic Basildon Park estate. Lower Basildon, which sits in the valley alongside the river Thames, and Upper Basildon, situated 1.5 miles to the South West on the other side of the park. In Lower Basildon there is the historic St. Bartholomews church, an old school complete with bell built in 1858 and a Bangladeshi restaurant, the Tamarind Tree. In Upper Basildon, there is The Local Primary School, The Village Hall, another church in the shape of a fish and the village pub, The Red Lion. Until recently there was a second pub, The Beehive, which is one of the oldest buildings in the village and hopefully it won't remain closed forever.
Local Places to Visit
There are many interesting places in close proximity to Basildon. The closest is obviously the National Trust property, Basildon Park, which lies directly between Upper and Lower Basildon and featured in the 2005 film adaptation of "Pride & Prejudice". By the river in Lower Basildon is Beale Park which is full of unusual animals and is a great place for children. If you fancy trying your hand at clay pigeon shooting then why not visit the Royal Berkshire Shooting School on Hook End Lane between Upper and Lower Basildon. Just down the road in Pangbourne there's a water sports centre called Adventure Dolphin and in Hampstead Norreys there's a Living Rainforest. What about Berkshires best kept secret, Bucklebury Farm Park or visit the wolves in Beenham at The UK Wolf Conservation Trust? For rail enthusiasts, The Didcot Railway Centre is only 10 miles away.
Have you got better pictures of Basildon?
Unfortunately the weather was very overcast when these photographs were taken and they don't really show Basildon in its best light. If you have any better photographs that you would be prepared to allow us to show here, then please email imagesofbasildon@basildon-berks.net.
